Feeling unknown to me until now: homesickness

Hurray, survived the first week in college, despite the utter madness of how things are ‘organised’ here. An an Erasmus student, you don’t have access to an online timetable so you have the pleasure to go around campus which is, may I add ,quite big, and look for timetables that are hung up somewhere. Of course, there is not just one big gigantic ‘time table wall’, no, that would be WAY too easy, every department has its own building (supposedly) where time tables are hung up in a rather unorderly fashion, which makes it quite difficult to find the courses I would like to take. The fact that they changed all the module codes doesn’t not make it any better……however, I did in the end (and after several panic attacks) find some of the modules that I am interested in. So far so good…..I really enjoyed the Dutch and Italian lectures I attended this week, so I am definitely going to continue with those. Translation on the other hand turns out to be a bit of a bitch…sorry, but it’s true. The unfortunate thing about being an Erasmus student (at least at le Mirail) is that you are at the mercy of your lecturer, which basically means that he/she decides if he/she wants to give you a bit of a break regarding exams (turning a blind eye) or be a bitch about it and grade you just as he/she would grade the native students…….one (cow of a) teacher already told me that they expect foreign students to have pretty good French, or why else would their Universities have sent them to France! Well, if that isn’t nice? I thought that going abroad to study is to actually deepen you knowledge of the language?? So, basically I am screwed! It’s one thing to read, talk and write essays in French (still difficult) but another to translate literature into French! Nevertheless, I heard that the guys in the German department are quite nice to the Erasmus students, so I am going in for some German/French translations next week….and pray it will be o.k.!

On top of all the ‘excitement’, I am now experiencing something I never really felt before: homesickness!! Ugh…..

Dooefstes Fach: Uebersetzungen

Gefuehl welches mir bis jetzt unbekannt war: Heimweh

Hurra, ich habe trotz total unorganisiertem Chaos an der Uni meine erste Woche ueberlebt! Das wahr ja wohl eine Odysee! Da wir als Erasmusstudenten keinen Zugang zu online Stundenplaenen haben, ‚duerfen‘ wir unsere Beine auf dem (eher grossen) Unigelaende ablatschen um die aufgehaengten Stundenplaene zu finden. Natuerlich gibt es keinen Ort wo die alle zusammen aufgehaengt sind, waere ja zu einfach, nein, jedes Department hat (anscheinend) ein eigenes Gebaeude wo die Stundenplaene an irgendeine Wand geklatscht werden. Nicht gerade einfach so seine Kurse zu finden, kommt noch dazu das die meisten Modulkode abgeandert wurden! Grrr...aber habs dann noch noch geschafft, einige meiner Kurse zu finden. Am Besten gefallen haben mir die Hollaendisch/Italienisch Kurse mit welchen ich definitiv weitermachen will. Aber leider ist das ja hier mit den Uebersetzungen nicht so toll. Erasmusstudenten sind den Dozenten ungluecklicherweise total ausgeliefert, dass heisst, das der Dozent entscheidet ob er/sie den auslaendischen Studenten aushelfen will und bei den Pruefungen vielleicht mal ein Auge zudrueckt oder halt nicht. Eine (Kuh von) Professorin hat mir jedenfalls schon mal klar gemacht das sie sehr gute Franzoesischkentnisse von den Erasmusstudenten erwartet, warum sonst wurden sie von ihren Unis nach Frankreich geschickt! Toll, oder? Ich dachte, dass der Sinn und Zweck von einem Austausschjahr in einem fremdsprachigen Land ja eigentlich daraus besteht seine Sprachkentnisse zu verbessern?! Das heisst, ich bin am Arsch! Ist ja eine Sache Franzoesisch zu lesen, sprechen oder auch ein paar Texte zu schreiben, aber eine ganz Andere Literatur ins Franzoesische zu uebersetzen!! Dennoch, ich habe gehoert dass die Typen im deutschen Department ganz nett sind und extra Uebersetzungskurse fuer Erasmusstudenten organisieren, da geh ich naechste Woche eben mal fuer Deutsch/Franzoesische Uebersetzungen.....und bete das es klappt!

Und um alles noch etwas ‚spannender‘ zu machen, krieg ich jetzt auch noch Heimweh! Ist mir noch nie vorher passiert!
